Halloween ideas for 2020

Halloween is almost here, and many communities are canceling their usual festivities. Have no fear! Well, have some fear. After all, it is Halloween, hee hee. Here are some ideas I’ve come up with for a spooky good time.

Halloween pinata (instructions here)

Dress up, even if it’s just to walk around your house, apartment, or yard!

Have a special Halloween breakfast, lunch or dinner! Orange pancakes. Black pancakes? (gel food coloring is amazing for vibrant colors). Go to the store and get special donuts.

Halloween bag hunt

Fill paper bag with treats: stickers, spider ring, lollipop, candy. Hide somewhere for children to find. If multiple children, label each one with a sticker. Put the coordinating sticker on an index card. Give each child a card—they get the bag with the corresponding sticker!

Inside the house/apartment: Hide Halloween things: snack bag with stickers, spider ring, candy, mini pumpkins, money! Play Halloween music as kids find things.

Halloween coloring pages

Make your own, or print from the internet. Wrap crayons/markers with a ribbon, staple coloring pages to make a book.

Other fun things

Get a bag of candy corn. Did you know that it’s called candy corn because when you lay them on top of each other in a circle, it looks like corn on the cob? Try it! How will you get them to stick together? (glue)

Blind taste test: This would probably only work with older kids, but see what happens. Make cooked spaghetti and put oil on it. Grab some olives. A baguette. Baby carrots. Kids are blindfolded, and stick their hands in the spaghetti. Ewww, brains! Olives are eyeballs, baguette is an arm or leg, and the carrots are bones.  You get the idea. What other foods can be made into creepy things? Write a story to go with the food, have them eat as each “body part” is mentioned.

Read Halloween books, fall books.
