Thanksgiving ideas for 2020

It’s the time of year that will test us all. Many of us travel during Thanksgiving, and gather with friends and family. This year, it will be different. It will be great! Here are some ideas for a fun and safe Thanksgiving with your immediate household.

Thanksgiving pinata (Find out how to make one here)

Cook all day. Let your kids help. Don’t stress if it’s not perfect. Laugh when you take a bite out of a cookie that accidentally got 2 cups of salt put in them instead of 2 cups of sugar.

Watch the National Dog Show (It’s on; I checked. Did you know that this dog show was inspired by the Mockumentary, Best in Show? I didn’t!)

Thanksgiving bag hunt

Fill paper bag with treats: turkey stickers, lollipop, candy corn, chocolate. Hide somewhere for children to find. If multiple children, label each one with a sticker. Put the coordinating sticker on an index card. Give each child a card—they get the bag with the corresponding sticker!

Talk about what your kids will hear about Thanksgiving, and what people teach now about Thanksgiving. Look up where you live and see if there is a Native American tribe there. Whose land do you live on? Talk about stereotypes; Pilgrims, Indians.

Talk about food—different foods we eat on Thanksgiving. What’s your favorite? Draw a picture of your ideal Thanksgiving plate. If you could eat one food from Thanksgiving all year long, what would it be? For older kids, have a debate. Cranberry sauce—canned or fresh?

Cut out leaf shapes and have each family member (yourself included) write down something they are thankful for; try to do more than one. If you have pets, write down what you think they would say. My cats would be thankful for the multiple cat trees and cat scratchers we have throughout our apartment.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday!
