Overwhelmed

Life is like a roller coaster, up and down. Kids can have some great moments, real highs, and it’s thrilling to be a part of their growth. Then comes the crash. It can be hard to grow up—we often make a big deal of kids getting “big”. They take two steps forward (sometimes literally), and one step back. It’s important to remember that growth is slow and steady, and to be in the moment for your child wherever they are. Sometimes when they realize they’re bigger, they suddenly want to be small again, and that’s okay. It can be overwhelming, for them and for us.

When I was a nanny for Grace, a 4-year-old girl, I took her to see Santa for the first time. We were really looking forward to it. Her mom had gotten her a new outfit, and I did her hair. She was excited, and nervous, too. She was a bundle of energy. It was a big step!

The moment came. She sat on his lap, and they talked, got their picture taken, the whole bit. I was squealing with excitement that she had met Santa, and we had a fun walk home. As soon as we got in the door, Grace collapsed on the floor, exhausted. We had made such a big deal about meeting this celebrity, Grace needed some time to relax and come down from her high of that afternoon. I took off her coat, she got her blanket, and I held her for a little while. We were quiet, just basking in stillness.

We all get overwhelmed at times. Take off your coat, grab your blanket, and be still.
